Neuro/Psych Sleep Clinic
The UCSF Neuro/Psych Sleep Clinic specializes in sleep disorders. We provide evaluations and care for patients with conditions that include insomnia, periodic leg movements, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias (such as sleepwalking and REM sleep behavior disorder), narcolepsy, excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep apnea. Our team includes neurologists, psychiatrists and psychologists.
While all patients with sleep concerns are welcome, our clinic particularly focuses on those who have neurological or psychiatric disorders.
For our insomnia patients, we offer a one-on-one treatment called CBT-I (cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia), which can help to address the underlying causes of sleeplessness. Benefits may include improving sleep quality, decreasing the time it takes to fall asleep, minimizing sleep disruptions and reducing dependency on sleep medications.
The CBT-I treatment course is typically 6 to 8 sessions. This method doesn’t involve medication and isn’t designed to replace regular psychotherapeutic care, though it may lessen anxiety and depression. Patients who are already on medication for insomnia or who have additional sleep issues can undergo CBT-I along with other prescribed treatments.
When needed, the Neuro/Psych Sleep Clinic arranges sleep studies at the UCSF sleep testing laboratory, located at 1600 Divisadero Street on the Mount Zion campus.
